PURPOSE:To produce a polyarylene thioether which is substantially linear and is improved in electrical properties, industrial productivity, etc., while suppressing the production of a crosslinked polymer as a by-product by polymerizing a specified thiophenol and/or a specified diphenyl disulfide through electrolysis. CONSTITUTION:A thiophenol of formula I (wherein R<1> and R<2> are each lower alkyl or lower alkoxy; R<3> and R<4> are each H or R<1>), e.g. 3,5-dimethylthiophenol, and/or a diphenyl disulfide of formula II (wherein S is sulfur; R<5> to R<8> are each R<1>; and R<9> to R<12> are each R<3>), e.g. 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyldiphenyl disulfide, are polymerized through electrolysis at -5 to 150 deg.C for 0.01-80hr in an organic solvent (e.g. dichloromethane) in an amount to give a monomer concentration of 10<-4>-10mol/l desirably by using a platinum electrode or the like to obtain a (substantially) linear polyarylene thioether. |
