The measuring probe is used to measure the depth of a gum pocket around a tooth end comprises a pin (11) pushed between the gum and the surface of the tooth (2) until it contacts the base of the pocket. The pin has a sliding sensor element (12) which is held by contact with the lip of the gum so that it moves axially along the pin during its insertion. The relative displacement is detected and evaluated to provide the required pocket depth. The upper end of the sensor element may act as a piston providing a pneumatic or spring bias which resists the movement of the sensor element away from the end of the pin.
