High-viscosity lactam melts for casting polyamide alloys - contain amorphous polymers, e.g. polysulphone, which do not interfere with lactam polymerisation

Lactam melts (I) based on anionically polymerisable lactams with at least 4 ring-C atoms (II) are claimed. Melts (I) contain 0.1-50 (pref. 1-40) wt.% amorphous polymers (III) which are soluble in (II) at 100-190 deg.C and do not (prohibitively) interfere with anionic lactam polymerisation (III) must not consist solely of styrene homo- or copolymer. Pref., (III) are (a) polysulphones of formula -(O-Phe-SO2-Phe)n-, -(O-Phe-CMe2-Phe-O-Phe-SO2-Phe)n- or -(O-Phe-A-Phe-O-Phe-SO2-Phe)n- (with Phe = 1,4-phenylene; A = 1,1-(3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexylidene)), (b) polyphenylene ethers of formula -(Ar-O)n- (with Ar = 1,4-phenylene substd. in positions 2 and 6 with H, 1-5C alkyl or Ph, pref. 2,6-di-Me, i.e. B = phthalimido; Ar', Ar'' = 2-30C residue, esp. with Ar' = Bisphenol A residue and Ar'' = phenylene), or (d) polyamide-imides, opt. in the form of polymer alloys, e.g. alloys of PPE and polystyrene or mixts. of polysulphones and ABS; pref., (I) contain 2-35 (esp. pref. 10-35) wt.% (III), and (II) are epsilon-caprolactone or mixts. thereof with up to 30 wt.% omega-laurolactam; (I) also contain catalysts, pref. Na salts of caprolactam and pyrrolidone, and caprolactam-MgBr or -MgI, and activators, pref. isocyanates and acid chlorides or the corresp. reaction prod. with lactams, and opt. fillers/reinforcing agents, pigments, stabilisers, oils, release agents, other alloying polymers, polyoxyalkylene or amino-terminated polyoxyalkylene ethers, etc. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are useful for the prodn. of semi-finished and finished prods. based on cast polyamide alloys, by anionic lactam polymerisation in presence of the normal catalysts and activators (claimed); also claimed are polymer alloys contg. polymerised (II) and (III), obtd. by anionic polymerisation of (I), a process for the prodn. of such alloys by dissolving (III) in (II) and anionically polymerising the modified melt, and moulded prods. based on these alloys.
