Cardiac massage apparatus comprises a flexible member 1 with cavities 7, 7a, 8, 8a for arrangement around the heart, the member including cardiac stimulation and defibrillation electrodes 10, 10a, 10b, and the cavities receiving fluid at a cyclically varying pressure. Cavities 7, 7a, 8, 8b are formed between flexible walls of the member 1 the outer wall being prevented from expanding by a metal or plastics insert. The cavities are connected to a pressure reservoir 12 (Figure 6 not shown) through pressure reducers 13, 14 and threeway valves 15, 16 which are electrically controlled to permit the alternate supply and withdrawal of a pressure fluid to and from the cavities for massaging the heart. Electrodes 10, 10a and 10b of metal or conductive rubber or plastics are connected to a cardiac stimulator and a defibrillator respectively. The control circuit for the valves (Figure 5 not shown) includes an impulse generator and a signal generator which may be controlled by heart voltages at the defibrillation electrodes so that the pressure pulses in the cavities are synchronised with the natural heart action. |
