Lightweight filler containing a non-woven fabric of essentially two-dimensionally oriented spun fibres, which are disaggregated and held together by hollow plastic microbeads. In order to prepare the lightweight filling material a slurry is formed of particles of the unexpanded precursor of hollow microbeads in the form of an aqueous suspension in the two-dimensionally oriented spun fibre non-woven fabric, the resulting material is dried and heated to the temperature necessary for expanding the particles for the necessary time.
