The modular digital communication system has the communication devices assigned to three different structural planes allowing the peripherals to be coupled with one another and with an open communication network incorporating a central system processor with a system data base (DB) and at least one multi-tasking operating system. Operating device programming modules (AMT, AMF, AMS) lying in an operating task phase (DH) are used to generate the logic signals and setting data for the peripherals. A coordinating taks task plane (LDU PD) contains a programme module (SES CON) for controlling the operating information and data flow. An application task plane has at least one application programme module (AMA) for developing the application orientated functions.
