An apparatus and method for direct oxidation of organic material such as organic wastes. The apparatus comprises an electrocell (10) divided by an aluminum frit barrier (16) into an anode compartment (22) with a carbon felt anode (12), a cathode compartment (24) having a platinum cathode (14), and a strongly oxidizing electrolyte (30). By applying a 2.5 to 3.5 volt potential across the anode (12) and cathode (14), organic materials can be oxidized to carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, water and inorganic acids in the absence of an electron transfer agent. The absence of the agent removes a potential source of hazardous waste and simplifies operation of the electrocell. It also enables the electrocell to be used in-line in a laboratory or industrial process to eliminate organic waste at the time of generation and thus obviate the need to store it for disposal. |
