The direction of travel is determined exclusively by the direction of rotation of the electric motor (1), and in the forwards travel direction two gear stages (4,7;5,8) are provided. For each gear stage a coupling (9,10) is provided, one being open and the other closed. The neutral position of the drive arrangement is obtained by switching off the electric motor (1). The couplings (9,10) are of the plate type, the inner plates (11) of which are located on a common plate carrier (12) of the drive shaft (6). On the plate carrier, a slide muff (16) movable into two positions is arranged, and in both positions one of the couplings (9 or 10) is closed and the opposing coupling (9 or 10) is open. The plate couplings (9,10) are movable against the force of a plate spring (17) fitted on the drive shaft (6) into their closed position. The force of the plate spring is such that the couplings can be engaged manually. ADVANTAGE - Electrically driven town car eliminates environmental pollution from IC engined vehicle exhaust fumes and markedly reduces traffic noise.
