Mould comprises a plunger for shaping a packing foil. This plunger is driven by a drive mechanism mounted laterally of the movement path of the plunger. Preferably, the drive mechanism, typically a chain passing around wheels, drives the plunger by means of engagement elements which can disengage when the plunger is moved into a retracted position. Appts. is used for a packaging machine, partic. one in which a number of packaging recesses are moulded in a single operation of the mould. By arranging the drive mechanism for the plunger at the sides of the plunger itself, the overall height of the apparatus is reduced and access to the plunger for changing the mould form is made much easier than with previous arrangements where the drive for the plunger was mounted directly above it.
