1,173,578. Ethylene chlorohydrin. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 21 Dec., 1966 [24 Dec., 1965], No. 57293/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C1] Ethylene chlorohydrin is prepared by reacting together (a) ethylene, (b) hydrogen chloride, and (c) a tellurium-containing oxidizing agent or molecular oxygen in the presence of, as catalyst, metallic tellurium, the reaction being performed in the presence of water in the liquid or gaseous phase. Specified oxidizing agents are tellurium dioxide, tellurium tetrachloride, telluric acid, tellurites, tellurates, basic tellurium sulphate and tellurium nitrate. During the process, the tellurium-containing oxidizing agent is reduced to elemental tellurium which may be simultaneously or subsequently reconnected to an oxidizing agent by reaction with oxygen. Ethanol, ethyl chloride and ethylene glycol are obtained as by-products. |
