A process for the nuclear methylation of hydroxy aromatic compounds, which are unsubstituted in at least one ortho position or in the para position to the hydroxyl group, is characterized in that methanol in which aluminium methylate is suspended as a catalyst is passed through the liquid hydroxy aromatic compound at 330-420 DEG C. and a substantial part of the methanol is evaporated. The examples describe the methylation of phenol which gives rise to a mixture containing o-, m-and p-cresol, 2,3-, 2,4- and 2,6-dimethyl-phenol and trimethyl and higher alkylated products together with anisole. |
