MANUFACTURE OF THERMALLY CURED COMPOUND ARTICLE

PURPOSE: To produce a thermoset composite article under a relatively mild condition. CONSTITUTION: In a method for producing a thermoset composite article, a laminate consisting of a partially cured thermosetting resin and a fibrous substrate is exposed to elevated temp. rising with the elapse of time and this elevated temp. is lower than the glass transition temp. of a resin but sufficient not only to accelerate the curing of the resin but also to raise the glass transition temp. of the resin to the limit glass transition temp. thereof. An exposure temp. is generally raised at a speed holding the temp. to a temp. range lower than the glass transition temp. of the thermosetting resin by about 20 deg.C to allow the curing of the resin to advance in a glass state. In this process, pressure is generally held to below about 50 psi and pref. atmospheric pressure. This method enables the production of a thermoset composite article suitable for high capacity use without performing long-time autoclave treatment.
