The end wall of a can is provided with a tear strip 19 to which is secured a pull tab 24, the strip 19 being defined by score lines 21, 22, 23 which merge into one another but have a terminal point F, the deepest of the three lines being 23 and the shallowest 22, with the line 21 of intermediate depth except at a point 52, Fig. 15 (not shown), where it is shallower than 22 and which is reached when can opening is nearing completion. A recessed part 26 of the end wall follows partially the contours of the strip 19 and is removable with the strip, Fig. 13 (not shown), since the point F is on its periphery. An annular bead 25 extends round the end wall inwards of the can rim. The tab 24 is of plastics and has a plug portion secured, by means of shoulders on the plug, in an opening in the end wall of the container, Fig. 3 (not shown). In a modification, Figs. 7-11 (not shown), the strip 19 has an upward boss forming a rivet to secure a metal tab. |
