An electrolyte composition for primary cells comprising an aqueous solution of metal chlorides or bromides, also contains from 3 to 30% by weight of the solution of a watersoluble trivalent salt of a rare earth element or of yttrium, to enable the cells to be used at temperatures below- 20‹ C. as well as at normal temperatures. Compositions described contain lanthanum chloride together with magnesium chloride, ammonium chloride, calcium chloride and water. |
