Biological redn. of sulphate and/or formation of sulphide in an aq. medium is retarded by addn. of an organic halogen cpd. to the medium. A halogen-contg. mercaptan or disulphide is used, pref. a Cl-contg. mercaptan, and partic. p-chlorobenzyl mercaptan. The amt. of halogen cpd. is 0.1-50 mg (1-15mg)/1 of aq. medium.
