Method for preparation of gamma-butyrolactol from maleate anhydride, amber acid or esters of those acids with aliphatic alcohols, by the hydrogenation method in gaseous phase on heterogenous catalyst, characterised in that the anhydride vapour of the maleate acid, amber acid or esters of those acids, mixed with 5-15 times as much hydrogen in mole ratio, are under temperature 230-300 degrees C and under pressure of 0.1-1 MPa passed through a catalyst deposite, containing 36-62 weight percent copper oxide, 15-32 weight percent zinc oxide and 3-6 weight percent aluminum oxide.
