PURPOSE:To reduce power consumption while maintaining purifying performance by shifting gears when vehicle speed or engine speed is high, if the degree of deterioration of a catalyst is high and the catalyst is at low temperatures during warm-up of an internal combustion engine, etc. CONSTITUTION:Vehicle speed or engine speed is set in such a manner that the higher the degree of deterioration of a catalyst 6 detected by a detecting means 7 for the degree of deterioration of the catalyst, the higher the set speed, while the lower the degree of deterioration the lower the set speed. If the degree of deterioration is high, a shift is directed by a shift timing indicating means 4 when the vehicle speed or engine speed is high, so as to raise the temperature of gas allowed into the catalyst 6, thereby promoting warming of the catalyst. When the degree of deterioration is low the temperature at which the catalyst is active is relatively low and so a shift is directed when the vehicle speed or engine speed is low, so as to maintain the purifying performance of the catalyst. In either state, the time required for the temperature at which the catalyst is active to be reached is almost the same. |
