PRODUCTION OF LEATHER-LIKE SHEETLIKE MATERIAL

PURPOSE:To obtain a flexible leather-like sheet by dissolving yarn aggregate of multicomponent fiber comprising a thermoplastic polyurethane having >=a specific turbidity as a dispersion medium component and a thermoplastic polymer incompatible with the polyurethane as a dispersion component and coagulating. CONSTITUTION:A thermoplastic polyurethane (polyester-based polyurethane having 5X10<-3>eq/g ester group concentration used as dispersion medium component having >=11 turbidity is melted while a thermoplastic polymer (e.g. polyamide) incompatible with the polyurethane is melted (disperse component). A mixed system of both the melts is spun to give polyurethane multicomponent yarn of sheath-core type comprising the dispersion medium component as a core component of multicore and the dispersion medium component as a sheath component. The multicomponent yarn is used to give a nonwoven fabric, which is impregnated with a solution of polyurethane (9C diol polyester-based polyurethane having 3.6X10<-3>eq/g ester base concentration) having <=9.5 turbidity. The polyurethane in the multicomponent yarn is dissolved and coagulated to give a leather-like sheet similar to natural leather, comprising the incompatible polymer, not solidifying ultrathin yarns.
