A method for the retreatment of waste water following its biological treatment, by reducing its content of suspended organic solids and lowering its concentration of biogenic compounds, wherein, the treated waste water is made to flow in succession across a series of at least two tanks having free liquid levels, for the one tank the time of flow, T1, being defined by the inequality 1.5 day > T1 > 0.5 day and the liquid remaining in a condition of oxygen deficiency that is defined by the relationship 200 > L/O > 30, where L denotes the load of suspended solids being introduced with the waste water feed for retreatment in kg /day and O denotes the quantity of oxygen introduced to the liquid in kg/day, whereas the shape of the first tank in the series is defined by the ratio of active area, F1, in m<2> to its volume, V1, in m<3> according to the inequality: 0.5 >= F1/V1 >= 0.2 and, correspondingly, for the other tank the time of flow, T2, is defined by the inequality 10 days > T2 > 1 day and the liquid remains in a condition of oxygen excess that is defined by the relationship 5 < L/O < 40, the shape of the second tank in the series being defined by the inequality: 0.2 >= F2/V2 >= 0.05.2.
