Exhaust gas cleaner for IC engine - has afterburner in-front of carrier of catalytic layers

The exhaust cleaner contains an afterburner complete with flame holder and igniter. The flame holder (2a) has a number of channels (2c) orientated in the exhaust flow sense and lined in catalyst. Pref. the flame holder consists of a catalytically coated exhaust catalyst support disc and is followed downstream or preceded upstream by an igniter spark plug (2b). ADVANTAGE - Catalytically coated channels passivate exhaust and set up micro-turbulence to stabilise ignition flame, burn exhaust without flame and so reduce pollution factors.
