The passenger cabin of a car is a separate unit mounted within the car frame and mounted on rollers on its underside. In the event of a front-end shunt, a sensor at the front of the vehicle operates an electric motor in the car frame. This winds up a steel cable attached to the rear of the cabin, which is then drawn forward, rotating upwards on the rollers as it does.
