Round logs are trimmed all round in the cutting of beams, planks and profiles in such manner that the log(s) is flattened longitudinally in several steps on all sides. The log is mounted on a horizontal support and a gantry (20), equipped with wood cutting tools (25,28,29), passes over it. At least two flat surfaces are machined simultaneously. The log may have been cut from a tapering tree trunk and the machine is so designed that flat surfaces inclined at the required angle of taper can be cut. The trimming may be carried out at up to 12 sides.
