PURPOSE:To efficiently produce the subject compound useful as a raw material for polyesters, etc., in a simple reaction device in an easy process operation by dehydration-reacting pentaerythritol in the presence of sulfuric acid catalyst under a specific temperature condition in a solvent-free melted state. CONSTITUTION:Pentaerythritol, produced by, for example, reacting formaldehyde with acetaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkali metal hydroxide or an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, is subjected to a dehydration reaction in the presence of 0.1-30wt.%, preferably 0.3-5wt.%, of sulfuric acid catalyst at 140-210 deg.C, preferably 150-170 deg.C, in a solvent-free melted state to produce dipentaerythritol useful as a raw material of polyethers, polyurethanes, alkyd resins, lubricants, high-density crosslinking agents, inks coatings, adhesives, etc., extremely advantageously on industry and economy. |
