PURPOSE:To obtain the title high-quality compound to be expected as an intermediate for various renin inhibitors by catalytically reducing an optically active 3-amino-4-phenyl N-2-hydroxybutyric ester in a solvent. CONSTITUTION:A compound shown by formula I [R is isopropyl; (*) and (**) are S-configuration or R-configuration, respectively] is catalytically reduced in a solvent, preferably 1-5C alcohol by using a platinum-based or rhodium-based catalyst at 20-110 deg.C, preferably 50-60 deg.C to give a compound shown by formula II. The compound shown by formula I as a raw material is obtained in high yield by reacting an optically active 3-amino-4-phenyl-2-hydroxybutyric acid with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. |
