PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate for producing penem-based antibiotics by a simple operation in good catalytic activity by reacting an azetidinone with acetic acid and an oxidizing agent by using an anhydrous or hydrous osmium halide compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A compound shown by formula I [Z is H, lower alkyl or replaceable hydroxyethyl; Y is H, carboxyl, lower alkyl or COOR<1> (R1 is lower alkyl)] is reacted with acetic acid or an oxidizing agent (e.g. peroxide of carboxylic acid or peroxide) by using an anhydrous or hydrous osmium compound shown by the formula OsX3 (X is Cl, Br or I) as a catalyst at -10 to 50 deg.C while stirring for 10 minutes to 5 hours to give a 4-acetoxyazetidinone shown by formula II (W is Y except carboxyl). |
