A planar transformer includes a multilayer PCB 11 having spiral windings 12, 13 formed on various surfaces. A ferrite core assembly includes first 18 and second 20 thin, flat sections disposed on opposite sides of the PCB and completely overlaying the windings 12, 13. This construction reduces stray fields. The two flat plates 18A, 20A are integral with or abut thin post sections 21, 22 that allow the PCB 11 to be accommodated between the first and second core sections 18, 20. The planar transformer may be incorporated with other components on the PCB to form a battery charger or isolation amplifier. The charger may be encapsulated in a male power connector (Figure 10). In an alternative embodiment, the spiral windings may be aligned on a PCB tongue inserted into a slot within a flat core (Figure 5). <IMAGE> |
