A friction element, e.g. for a motor vehicle brake or clutch, consists of a matrix (1) with its friction surface coated with particles (2) which have projecting surfaces of a wear-resistant material, fitted into the body of the matrix so that they form a regular micro-relief. - The particles have projecting surfaces of different sizes and with an area which reduces from the zone of maximum stress to the zone of minimum stress. In the zone of maximum stress the particles can have either a greater surface area or a greater density, and they can be set in concentric circles coinciding with the centre of the matrix disc. The matrix can also have corrosion- and abrasion-resistant particles in between the wear-resistant particles.
