The invention comprises vat dyes of the formula <FORM:1025915/C4-C5/1> wherein A is benzene or naphthalene, n is 1 or 2, one Z is H, the other is -NH-R1-NH-X in which R1 is the acyl residue of an at least dibasic carboxylic acid and X is a vattable anthraquinone residue, and wherein at least one -SO3H or -COOH is present in A or in another external aryl, and the residue <FORM:1025915/C4-C5/2> is bound in ortho-position to the same six-membered ring of the anthraquinone residue which are prepared by (a) sulphonating the corresponding compound free of -SO3H groups, (b) carbazolizing a compound <FORM:1025915/C4-C5/3> (c) carbazolizing and sulphonating simultaneously, (d) condensing in either sequence an acid chloride or anhydride of an acid HO-R1-OH with 1 mol of an amino-anthraquinone NH2-X and 1 mol of an appropriate amino -anthraquinone-carbazole, or (e) acylating a dye of Formula (I) free of -SO3H groups and containing a free -NH2 group in the residue X with an acid chloride containing -SO3H. The dyes may be further substituted with halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, sulphato, thiosulphato, eliminable H atoms, epoxy residues, pyrimidines or triazines containing phenoxy, anilido, mercapto or ethyleneimine groups. Many suitable acids suitable for the residue R1 are specified including, isophthalic acid, azobenzene-dicarboxylic acid, azodiphenyl-dicarboxylic acid, furan-dicarboxylic acid, thiophen-dicarboxylic acid, and oxalic, succinic and glutaric acids. Sulphonation may be carried out with oleum and carbazolization with H2SO4 of at least 95% strength. Acylation may be carried out in an inert organic solvent or in aqueous medium in the presence of an acid-binding agent. The dyes may be used to dye films of material or regenerated cellulose, cellulose ethers and esters, polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes, polyacrylonitrile, wool and silk. Examples are given in which a large number of dyes are specified. |
