Fatty-alcohol polyalkylene-glycol ethers with improved filterability can be obtained by a) reacting fatty alcohols of the formula (I): R<1>-OH, in which R<1> is an aliphatic hydrocarbon residue with 6-24 atoms and 0, 1, 2 or 3 double bonds, in the presence of layer compounds, with an average of 1-20 moles of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide per mole of fatty alcohol; b) treating the reaction product with a non-polymeric precipitating agent; and c) separating off the solid precipitate formed from the layer compound and the precipitating agent.
