The invention concerns a method of synthesizing directly organo-tin chlorides of the formula RnSnCl4-n, in which n = 1 or 2 and R is a straight-chain, branched-chain or cycloaliphatic alkyl rest with 4 to 18 C-atoms, by reacting tin(II)-chloride with alkyl chlorides. The method is characterized in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of amines of the general formula A: R<1>aN[(CH2CH2O)m CH2CH2OR<2>]3-a and/or substituted ammonium chlorides of the formula B: R<1>bN[(CH2CH2O)mCH2CH2OR<2>]4-b Cl in which a = 0, 1 or 2; b= 0, 1, 2 or 3; R<1> is a straight-chain, branched-chain or cycloaliphatic alkyl group with 2 to 24 C-atoms, or an aryl, alkylaryl or substituted-aryl group, and if a = 2 or b = 2 or 3, the R<1> groups may be the same or different; R<2>=H is a straight-chain or branched-chain alkyl group with 1 to 20 C-atoms, or an aryl, substituted-aryl or alkylaryl group; and m = 1 to 20. Organo-tin chlorides produced in this way are particularly suitable for use as intermediates in the preparation of thermostabilizers for PVC resins.
