A carrier layer (1) has a heating resistance (A), and a surface layer brought into thermal contact with the item to be heated. The heating resistance is made as a flat conductor using thick film technology, the conductive pattern being deposited as a paste on the carrier layer, thus ensuring good thermal contact between the heating element and carrier and a mechanically stable carrier. The carrier may comprise an enamelled metal plate, the heating resistance being deposited on the surface of the enamel. The carrier may be a cast hot plate coated with a carbon-free enamel, or a metal sheet having a number of heating elements provided in different regions.
