A glass melting furnace consists of a melting section, a refining section and a homogenising section. Most of the energy input is by burners of fossil fuel in the refining section; the flue gases are passed in counterflow to the branch through the melting section and leave it near the changing end. The surface flow in the melting section runs counter to the batch. Partitions suspended from the roof of the melting section maintain the highest temperature in the refining section. The charging end is heated by the bottom electrodes.
