The length difference measurement uses detection of the velocity of the reception sleeve (H) before and after a cooling path (k5) for the latter. The difference between the two velocities is used to calculate a parameter dependent on the required length difference. Alternatively the parameter value is calculated from the temp. difference between the detected temps. of the sleeve (4) on either side of the cooling path. The obtained value is used as a control value for a temp. regulating circuit. The optical conductor (LWA) comprising the optical fibre (LWL) and the seleve (H) is wound through at least 180 degrees around a storage reel (SR11,SR21) before and after the cooling path.
