A liq., aq. cleaning compsn. contains (a) 0.01-40 wt.% of an amphoteric polymer obtd. by copolymerising a cationic vinyl monomer with an anionic vinyl monomer, and (b) an anionic, nonionic, cationic or amphoteric surfactant, in ratio by wt. of (a):(b) of 20-1:1. Component (a) is such that a 0.1% soln. in water of hardness 16 deg. causes irreversible hydrophilisation of PVC with increments of the wetting tension of at least 3 mN/m. Pref. the cleaner contains 0.02-5 wt.% of the amphoteric polymer, which esp. contains at least 1 mol. of a nitrogenous acrylic acid deriv., w.r.t. 1 mol. of acrylic acid. The ratio by wt. of (a):(b) is 10-1:1.
