Mfr. of briquettes from rolling mill scale - for reuse in steel-making processes

A process for the processing of rolling mill scale, particularly oil-contg. rolling mill scale, for re-use in the steelmaking process. The rolling mill scale is briquetted after the addn. of a binder, and the briquette is fed to the steelmaking process. Pref. the binder comprises molasses, partic. sugar beet molasses, and a catalyst. The catalyst is powdered lime (Ca hydroxide). The briquette compsn. is (wt.%): 89-92 rolling mill scale; 5-7 binder; and 3-4 lime. The briquettes are used in a steel converter or blast furnace. ADVANTAGE - A cost-effective process for processing oil-contg. rolling mill scale in particular for re-use in steelmaking. The process avoids the costs associated with feeding oil-contg. scale to sinter plant fitted with electrostatic precipitators (due to burn-out of the filters) and with solvent extn. of the oil
