Material and/or heat are exchanged between fluid fed axially to the ends of and flowing inside the elongated hollow fibres of a bundle held in a tubular casing and with their ends embedded in cast material , and a second fluid flowing transversely round the fibre exteriors. Inlet and outlet for axially and radially flowing fluids are formed in separate caps applied to the bundle ends, and contg. distribution chambers sealingly sepd. from each other for the two fluids, at both ends of the bundle. The peripheral chambers for receiving the second fluid have wall apertures connected to the casing interior. To form the casing, an elongated strip may be curved to cylindrical shape and its profiled edges clipped together as a longitudinal seam. A long cylinder thus formed can be cut to several required lengths, with sealant then cast round the fibre ends before cap application.
