The voltage from the lambda probe in the exhaust channel of the engine is measured. The probe's characteristics giving values for lambda against probe voltages are used to obtain a value for the deviation in lambda, which is then used to control the amount of fuel supplied to the engine. The deviation may be formed as the difference between voltages or between lambda values. The probe's characteristics are defined by a mathematised function.
