A bicycle with hydrostatic transmission comprises hydraulic rather than mechanical components. A compensated axial-flow pump (11) is placed between the pedals, which are connected at their ends to the central shaft (29) of said pump. A radial motor (14) is placed in the middle of the driving wheel and both ends of the drive shaft (26) are joined to the bicycle frame. Unlike a conventional motor, the rotor (25) of the motor (14) is stationary and the motor body rotates to drive the bicycle wheel. Hydraulic fluid is supplied through an opening at the centre of each end of the shaft. The gearing ratio is controlled by varying the closed-circuit flow rate of hydraulic fluid from the pump to the motor. This variation in pump capacity is achieved by altering the angle of the tilting plate. This alteration results from the difference between the forces exerted by the pump hydraulic pressure on a spring whose tension has been previously adjusted by means of a calibrated barrel. Unlike other transmission systems, the load can be kept constant at all times and in all circumstances. |
