PURPOSE:To obtain the polarization maintaining optical fiber coil having the fiber sectional shape with an arbitrary polarization maintaining characteristic by applying a solvent layer contg. specific metals in the spacing between an optical fiber and the outer inner periphery of a cylinder, and subjecting the fiber to a heat treatment. CONSTITUTION:The solvent contg. the uni- to bivalent metals is previously applied on the outside surface of the cylinder type frame 14 before the single mode optical fiber 11 and is wound on the cylinder type frame 14. The single mode optical fiber 11 is then wound on this applied solvent and is subjected to the heat treatment to diffuse the uni- to bivalent metals onto the surface of the single mode optical fiber 11, by which a univalent metal ion-diffused layer 17 is constituted. For example, Ag is used as the metal and, for example, butyl acetate is used as the solvent. The viscosity is specified to 1000 to 10000 centipoises. The uni- to bivalent metals are diffused as metal ions into the clad of the single mode optical fiber 11 when the system formed in such a manner is rested for 30 minutes to 3 hours in the constant temp. of 140 to 350 deg.C. |
