In a filter insertion machine 1, each length 9 of a first succession of lengths of cigarette, distributed with a determined step P1, is connected inside a rolling station 20 to a corresponding length 10 of a second succession by means of a joining sheet element 14 to form a double cigarette 33, the rolling determining a reduction of the step P1 of distribution, and the double cigarettes 33 being taken from the rolling station 20 with their reduced step P2 and fed, with this reduced step P2, to a successive part 35 of the machine 1.
