PREPARATION OF TERTIARY BUTYL ALCOHOL

Tertiary butyl alcohol is prepared by the catalytic decomposition of tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, preferably in solution in tertiary butyl alcohol, in the presence of a metal porphine catalyst, optionally promoted with mercaptan or amine, in the presence of a soluble ruthenium catalyst compound promoted with a bidentate ligand, in the presence of an imidazole-promoted metal phthalocyanine catalyst or in the presence of a metal phthalocyanine catalyst promoted with a rhenium compound with a base, borate or a C1 to C18 thiol or a free radical inhibitor, wherein the base has a pH greater than about 7.5 when 0.10 mole is dissolved in one litre of water; wherein the borate is a Group 1A IIA or IB metal borate; and wherein the thiol may be dodecane thiol; wherein the phthalocyanine is a metal of Group IB, Group VIIB or Group VIIIB or the Periodic Table, (wherein the rhenium compound may be rhenium heptoxide-p-dioxane.
