A pressure seal arrangement for a pressurized or evacuated container 13 for the treatment of a web 18 of textile material, comprises an orifice 12 in the container 13, a lip formation 11 about the periphery of the orifice 12 and a moving surface 16 adapted to contact the formation 11 over the full extent-thereof and to bear there against, the lip formation 11 and/or the moving surface 16 being resiliently deformable thus to allow passage therebetween of the web 18 whilst retaining an effective seal over the full extent of the formation 11. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the formation 11 is of polished stainless steel suitably secured to the container 13 and may be coated with polytetrafluoroethylene to reduce friction. A driven roller 14 is mounted about the orifice 12 to extend beyond the ends thereof and has a resilient surface comprising a rubber sleeve 16 thereon. The roller 14 is urged into contact with the lip formation 11 by applying screw pressure by means 15 to the roller arbors which are vertically adjustable in slides in end pillars 17. The web 18 enters and leaves the container 13 through the orifice 12. In a modification (not shown), the web enters the container through one orifice and leaves through a second orifice, each orifice being provided with a seal. In another embodiment, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), channels 11a to receive cooling water are provided in the lip formation 11 and a packing piece 19 of heat insulating material is positioned between the lip formation 11 and the container 13. The loading means 15 comprises a piston and cylinder, the piston controlling the position of the roller arbor bearing blocks longitudinally of slides 20 in the pillars 17. The roller 14 is driven by a chain 21a. Guide stops 11b prevent the rubber cover of the roller 14 spreading under pressure. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the formation 71 and the roller 14 are located inside the container, upward pressure being applied to the roller arbors from a screw loading device 15 through links 15a pivoted to end pillars 17 and arranged to urge the bearing blocks upwardly. In a still further embodiment, Fig. 5, a lip formation 24 is disposed, with an interposed heat-insulating layer 25, about an orifice 23 in a container 22. The lower run 26a of an endless band 26 supported on rollers 27 bears against the formation 24. An adjustment screw 31 is provided to adjust the position of one of the rollers 27 to adjust the tension in the band 26. Additional loading may be applied by a roller 32 bearing downwardly on the run 26a. The moving surface constituted by the surface of the roller 16 or the band 26 may be lubricated by water, soap, silicone or from the moisture content of the web. In further modifications (not shown), the lip formation instead of the moving surface may be resilient or both the lip formation and the moving surface may be resilient.
