A stream of preheated air from the regenerator of an open hearth furnace is fed from a passage 3 to the underside of the fuel jet from a burner 5 by a stream of auxiliary air 11 induced from outside the furnace by a jet of combustion supporting gas from a nozzle 6. The combustion supporting gas, which may be air, oxygen or steam is fed at high pressure to a convergentdivergent nozzle surrounded by a sleeve communicating with the atmosphere outside the furnace. The auxiliary air stream may also be preheated. |
