A bearing assembly comprises two rolling bearings mounted in the bore of an idler sheave 3, an annular groove 15 in the bore having its sides (17, 18) at obtuse angles to its base (22), and a distance ring 16 positioned in the groove without contacting the base of the groove to space the outer races 9, 10 of the bearings. The ring 16 is bent from wire having a cross-section which is axially elongated and which has rounded portions abutting the surfaces (17, 18, Fig. 2, not shown) of the groove and bevelled surfaces (19, 20) of the races. The ring may be of steel, copper, brass, bronze, aluminium or magnesium alloys, and is deformed by axial pressure of the races 9, 10. |
