PURPOSE:To provide the device which is usable both as a transmission type and a reflection type by providing a means for switching the light from a built-in light source and external light on the rear side of the liquid crystal display device and operating this light source switching means. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display element 14 is constituted of a liquid crystal material 11, an electrode substrate 12, and polarizing plates 13a, 13b and the light source switching device 16 is disposed to face the polarizing plate 13b. This light source switching device 16 contains a light source and a reflecting material therein and irradiates the liquid crystal display element 14 with the light from the light source and the external light reflected by the reflecting material by switching the above-mentioned light. The counter viewing side of the liquid crystal display element 14 is irradiated with the light from the light source and the external light reflected by the reflecting material by selectively operating the light source switching device 16 in such a manner and, therefore, the same liquid crystal display device is usable both as the transmission type and the reflection type. |
