MANUFACTURE OF ACTIVE ELEMENT ADDED OPTICAL FIBER PARTS

PURPOSE:To add an active element in high density to a part contributing to light amplifying capacity so as to perform efficient light amplification, laser oscillation and light propagation by forming a glass coat formed at the diameter thinned part of an optical fiber by a solgel method. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 1 spun from preform formed of clad base material and core base material is superheated with a burner flame 3 through a quartz plate 2 and drawn to provide the optical fiber 1 with a diameter thinned part 4. Active element added sol 5 with a light amplifying active element added using a solgel method is prepared and applied to the diameter thinned part 4 of the optical fiber 1 to form a coat 51. The coat 51 is dried and gelled. The optical fiber is then heated and sintered to form a transparent glass coat 6. The active element can be thus added in high density to the part contributing to light amplifying capacity so as to perform efficient light amplification, laser oscillation and light propagation.
