1,138,859. Card-positioning device. MOSLER SAFE CO. 14 April, 1966 [27 April, 1965], No. 16467/66. Heading G5C. Apparatus for positioning a card, for example a microfilm card (8) at a viewing station comprises card holder 34 mounted for vertical movement within frame 32 which is itself capable of horizontal movement, the movements being controlled by two independent motors mounted on a base and operatively connected by flexible inextensible cables 130, 176 to the frame and the holder respectively. The card may be raised by an air jet from a pocket (6) in rotatable filing drum (2) (Fig. 1, not shown) and moved upwards by rollers (13), (14) to card clamping assembly 36, when clamping plate (98) is momentarily pulled away from rear plate 96 under the action of electromagnets 118, 120 to allow insertion of the card. Motor (42) or (44) controls vertical movement of holder 34 within frame 32 by means of cable 176; motor (38) or (40) controls horizontal movement of frame 32 by means of endless cable 130 (Figs. 6, 8, not shown). The motors may be under manual control; alternatively the movement of the frame and of the holder is controlled by an error signal which is the difference between a command signal and a signal produced by potentiometer (160) or (160<SP>1</SP>) operatively connected to the respective cable (Fig. 6) and fed as input to the respective motor. Figs. 9, 10 (not shown) relate to an alternative arrangement for providing vertical motion of holder (34A) within frame (32A) by means of endless cable (300) and motor (320).
