PURPOSE:To reduce load on operators and enable prevention against oversight of dust, visual disorder, etc., by sensing the dust sticking to an optical fiber base material with a dust position sensor, polishing the preform with a flame, removing the dust, then drawing a wire and carrying out end finding processing. CONSTITUTION:Both ends of an optical fiber base material 6 before a wire drawing step are held with chucks 4 and 5 and the vicinity of the lower end of the optical fiber base material 6 is heated with a flame of a burner 7 and separated to carry out end finding processing. In this case, dust sticking to the optical fiber base material 6 is sensed by taking surface images of the optical fiber base material to be separated with a dust sensor 11, e.g. a small- sized TV camera and catching the light and shade in the case of the sticking dust and the light and shade without any sticking dust. The resultant light and shade information is inputted to a controller 12 and dust position is computed to increase the movement of a traverse mechanism 8 and the amount of the flame from the burner 7. Thereby, the sticking dust is removed by flame polishing. |
