The invention relates to a grab of the so-called release gear type, controlled by a cable (22), the said grab comprising: an upper framework (1), two lower shells (2, 3) joined together, by a central articulation pin (16), a balance arm (5) articulated at (20) to the framework, capable of moving vertically between a low position and a high position and controlled by the cable with the aid of return pulleys (18), and a device configured for locking the spindle (16) onto the balance arm (5) when the latter is in the low position, determining the closure of the shells (2, 3), and set out to release the spindle (16) when the balance arm, in the high position, bears on the framework (1), therefore determining the opening of the shelves (2, 3). This grab is characterised in that the said device consists of at least one cam (9) mounted on the spindle (23) about which the two pulleys (18) rotate, and of a stud (12) carried by a shell (2), the said cam interacting with the said stud and driving it in its upward movement when the balance arm passes from its low position to its high position, and releasing the said stud when the balance arm has reached its high position. This grab is noteworthy in that it is controlled exclusively by the cable (22). <IMAGE>
