Two-part feeder esp. for production of iron castings, consists of exothermic material to keep metal liquid until completion of the casting process and comprising a bottom part of exothermic material with elongated oval feed opening and a fitting hollow top part forming the cavity. Each end of the elongated feed opening is formed to receive a pin fixing the feeder to the pattern and the area between pin locations is of reduced cross section. The cross section of the opening tapers inward from the base to the cavity throughout the depth of the feeder bottom. Each feeder top is provided with pin openings in line with the pin locations in the feeder bottom. A variant using a central spring pin with appropriate adaptor for the elongated feed opening is also claimed. The depth of the feeder bottom is over 25% and up to 60% of total feeder height. Feeder tops of varying cavity volume are usable with the feeder bottom which is constant in shape. ADVANTAGE - Facilitates breaking of the feeder sprue and simplifies fixing of the feeder to the pattern.
